Honey Bees in December!

best bees

This week was one of those weeks in North Carolina that lend truth to the saying, “If you don’t like the weather here, just hold on for a few minutes.” On Thursday it was sunny and 74 degrees; I was sweating while out dog training in the meadow with the three darling Cavaliers that are visiting (Abigail, Nina, and Jojo). Today it was 33 degrees, raining most of the day, and threatening ice formation on all surfaces. Happily, that never happened, probably because we had gas for the generator. In my experience of living one mile off of the paved road, well-prepared most often = no problems. However, ill-prepared usually = so sorry.

Anyway, the whole point of this post is to announce our honeybees! No, they are not in a hive although that is in my future plans and I’ve taken a bee keeper certification course. I actually have no idea where these hone bees are living since I know they will travel long distances for sustanance. I first heard them buzzing when I stepped off the porch steps but I could not figure out what was going on at that point. Then when I came back to the house a little later and approached the steps I saw them! Thirty or forty bees were buzzing all around the sugary gum drops that I had pushed onto the thorns of a bitter lemon branch. I had made this holiday gum drop “tree” several days before and wondered how it would fare just outside the porch overhang. Well, the bees let me know – the damp air produced by temperature variations had made the sugary candies weep sugar water. I had unknowingly created a honey bee’s delight in early winter! I never cease to be amazed at the little wonders here.
